What is The Human Soul in the Machine?

The Human Soul in the Machine is an online exhibition built around POND's album Space Walks (New Electronics). Each of the album's eight songs was given to a commissioned visual artist, who answered it with a new work — a painting or a film. Visitors insert a coin, browse the eight records in a jukebox floating in deep space, and play each song alongside its work.

Who made the visual works for POND's Space Walks?

Five artists were commissioned. Steveo Spirals created the films for Space Walks and Wind of Planet. Alessia Sersanti painted Nebula Blues for Orbit and Is There Anybody Out There? for Galactic Excursion. Abdul Kariim created Imagination of Dreams. JBR Visuals directed the films for Moon Flight and Paradise Island. Kevin Charles created the music video for Space Light.

How do I view the exhibition?

Open the site and click the brass coin to enter. Inside, flip through the eight jewel cases, then select one — the disc pops out and the artist's work plays full screen alongside the song. You can switch between all eight tracks at any time from the dock at the bottom of the screen.

1. Acceptance of these terms

This website (the “Site”) presents The Human Soul in the Machine, an online exhibition pairing the album Space Walks (New Electronics) by POND with eight commissioned visual works. By inserting the coin, or by otherwise using the Site, you confirm that you have read, understood and agree to be bound by these Terms of Use and the Privacy Notice set out below. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.

2. Audio and video playback — your permission

The Site plays sound. Inserting the coin is a deliberate action by which you give your permission for audio to be played through your device, together with accompanying moving-image works. This is the only purpose for which that permission is used.

No audio plays before you insert the coin. Your browser requires this deliberate action, and so do we.
You may pause playback, or adjust or mute the volume, at any time using the on-screen controls or your device.
Playback occurs locally, in your browser. Nothing is recorded, captured or transmitted from your device or microphone.
Please be mindful of your volume in shared or public spaces, and of your hearing when using headphones.

3. Privacy Notice

We do not ask you for any personal information, and the Site contains no sign-up, no account, no login and no forms. Specifically, as at the date above, the Site:

sets no cookies and writes nothing to your device’s local or session storage;
does not request, use or store your location, and never asks your device for it;
does not collect your name, email address, postal address or telephone number;
uses no advertising, no profiling, no cross-site tracking and no third-party trackers or social plug-ins;
makes no requests to third-party servers — all media and code are served from this domain.

3.1 Anonymous exhibition measurement

So that we may understand which works are being viewed, we may record simple, aggregated and anonymous measurements of activity on the Site — for example which tracks are selected, and how long a work is viewed. Any such measurement is designed so that:

it is aggregate and anonymous, and is not linked to you or to any identifier;
no IP address is stored by us, and no profile of you is created or retained;
it cannot be used to identify you or to follow you across other websites;
it is used solely to report on the exhibition to the artists and to the project’s partners.

3.2 Technical data processed by our hosting provider

In common with every website, the Site is delivered by a hosting and content-delivery provider whose servers necessarily process your device’s IP address and basic request information in order to deliver the page to you and to protect the service against abuse. That processing is carried out by the provider as part of the ordinary operation of the internet; we do not use that data for analytics, do not build any profile from it, and do not sell, rent or share it.

3.3 Children

The Site is a public artwork suitable for a general audience. It is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect information from anyone.

4. Intellectual property

All rights are reserved by the respective rights-holders.

The musical works and sound recordings are the property of POND and its rights-holders.
Each visual work — whether a painting, film or other artwork — remains the property of the individual artist who created it, as credited on the Site.

You are welcome to view and share a link to the Site. You may not download, copy, record, screen-capture for redistribution, reproduce, adapt, publicly perform, broadcast or make any commercial use of the music or the artworks, in whole or in part, without the prior written permission of the relevant rights-holder. Nothing on the Site grants you any licence in the works beyond viewing them here.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to interfere with or disrupt the Site or its infrastructure; not to attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of it; and not to use any automated means to extract, scrape or re-host the media it contains.

6. Availability, changes and disclaimers

The Site is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, to the fullest extent permitted by law. We do not warrant that the Site will be uninterrupted or error-free. The exhibition, its running order and these terms may be updated from time to time; the date at the top of this notice indicates when it was last revised. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we exclude liability for any indirect or consequential loss arising from your use of the Site. Nothing in these terms limits any liability which cannot lawfully be limited, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
